I started the image as a study in lighting and shading and finally it turns into a season greetings card. Rendered in XSI Mental Ray with FG. Since I only own XSI foundation the fur was added as an extra layer rendered with sasquatch in Lightwave. Textures were painted in Photoshop.
DOF was added in Photoshop with DOF pro.

These images are part of an experiment series for testing shading, displacement and post effects in Realsoft 3D (more images can be found here art.bt-3d.de ). I've written the microscope shader in VSL some time ago and still tweak it.
